We recently came across this graphic that puts the unused dollars of gift card money into terms many of us can better visualize; gallons of gas and annual college tuition payments.  Here at Gift Card Giver, we were inspired by those words, “what it could have bought.”  We like to think about these figures in terms of the number of lives that can be changed or helped by those unused dollars.

Using the same math, our calculation would look like this:  In 2008 there was approximately 9.1 billion in unused gift card dollars.  $350 is the average amount of money that we send to an organization or individual who has applied for help from Gift Card Giver.  This means we could help 26 million people!

Now, we’ve helped a lot of folks over the years, but when you break it down like this it is easy to see that we’ve only scratched the surface.

STEP 2: Write how much is left on your card using a permanent marker.
